The effect of informal learning on students' knowledge of and ideas about ecology
Radoslav Kvasničák, Pavol Prokop, Zuzana Pištová
e-Pedagogium 2005, 5(4):28-38
In this study we investigated the effect of informal learning on students' knowledge of ecology. Children's drawing served as the primary data collection method (with a high reliability coefficient, Cronbach's α = 0.90). An experimental group (with the influence of informal learning) and a control group (without an experimental influence) underwent pretests and posttests. The posttest scores show a significant between-group difference in the expected direction; the experimental group had higher scores on average when compared to the control group. Interestingly, understanding of forest ecosystems was worse in comparison to the understanding of...

Vývin schopností klasifikácie vtákov u žiakov základných škôl
Pavol Prokop, Milan Kubiatko
e-Pedagogium 2005, 5(4):47-54
Previous research indicates that especially younger children have problems with the classification of animals. Children seem to attend primarily to two criteria for animal classification: habitat and manner of locomotion. We tested whether the locomotion criterion would affect children's classification of birds with atypical features and other animals that bear some bird-like features but are not genetically related to birds. We found that children of all ages had serious problems with animal classification and that their success or failure was correlated to what species the animal belonged to.
An assessment of exercises in biology workbooks
Olga Vránová
e-Pedagogium 2005, 5(4):55-66
The paper reports the results of an assessment of exercises in biology workbooks. Twelve workbooks were evaluated (published by Prodos, Fortuna, Nová škola and Jinan). Tollingerová's classification was implemented to assess the quality of the exercises. Results indicate that the least difficult exercises (groups 1 and 2) prevail in individual workbooks.
