On the basic-school education of children with a socio-cultural disadvantage

Ivana Knausová

e-Pedagogium 2006, 6(3):31-38

The present paper tries to identify the factors which can bring about a socio-cultural disadvantage of a schoolchild. Children who have family backgrounds not providing a stimulating environment (typically families with a lower level of educational background) are often unsuccessful at schools precisely because of their poor and insufficient ability of expressing themselves. The paper further discusses what possibilities there are within the current educational policy of the state. The principle of individualization and differentiation is described...

Pavol Prokop, Matej Prokop

e-Pedagogium 2006, 6(3):73-85

The classification of animals is the basis of biology at all types of schools. As previous research indicates, children however have fallacious ideas about the internal structure of organisms and their taxonomic classification. Only a limited number of studies have focused on the question of whether experience with breeding animals influences the level of children's knowledge about the animals' internal structure. The present study reports findings that children mostly keep vertebrates as pets and that this experience positively affects their knowledge about the animals' internal structure. Children could not however apply this knowledge to the invertebrates...
