The paper presents an attempt to examine the potential of a family in combination of three dimensions: the family is able - is not able to care; the family wants - does not want to care; and the family can - can not provide the care. It also focuses on the ability of family to provide social support to a child placed in a special care institution.

Keywords: typology, family abilities, family skills, residential care, social support
