In this article we will consider some of the ways which research on metacognition has developed and offer new areas for work on metacognition in preschool children. This paper introduces a metacognitive programme that helps teachers promote children's thinking abilities. It provides evidence of cognitive acceleration in children of 5 and 6 years old. The most powerful aspect of metacognitive experiences is that children come to regard themselves as thinkers, as individuals who have some control over their own learning.
