Three years of research in students' preparedness for the study of information technology

This paper examines students' preparedness for the study of information technology (IT) at the BERG faculty of the Technical University in Košice. The research conducted aimed at assessing students' knowledge of IT acquired at secondary schools. An electronic questionnaire using internet and database technologies that enhance data analysis possibilities was employed to elicit responses from students. A wide range of variables were examined including distributional and demographic data (gender, place of residence, secondary school type), the influence of secondary school, computer usage, internet technology usage, knowledge of operating systems, knowledge of standard computer programs and programming languages, and the interest in IT. The results are used to indicate trends in respective areas.
