How much spoken language does the student need?

Danuše Varadinová

This article tries to answer the question to what extent it is permissible to accept the elements of spoken language in grammar lessons. Spoken language is so widely used that its elements are gradually applied in writing, the reason of it being its simpler norm and less rigid nature. The choice between the spoken and written norm is determined by: the type of communication (speaking, writing) and the specific type of the text.
In conclusion it is necessary to stress that although the elements of spoken language form an integral part of academic grammar seminars, there are certain limitations: only standard and common spoken language elements of grammar and lexis can, in my opinion, be used and taught to students.
