The aim of the paper is to explore possible practical use of Judith Butler's theory of performativity for education. The main theme of her theory of performativity deals with the constitution of subjective identity in relation to language and power. An example of performativity can be seen in a teacher's possible remark like "Girls usually aren't so good in mathematics" - such statement can be seen as an example of speech act, which is not only a description of a neutral situation, but also have potential to act performatively. This approach can be used for an analysis of power and language in education as proved in works by W. Kohli and V. Walkerdine.
