Means of augmentative and alternative communication and their current usage

This paper examines the application of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) techniques. Teachers of preparatory classes in Czech special schools participated in this study. They were questioned about the usage of AAC in their work. Opinions on the efficiency of AAC for the education of the mentally handicapped were elicited and obstacle for the application of AAC were identified.

Some physical aspects of auditory perception and their usability for multimedia applications

Towards innovation of evaluating the difficulty of text in biology textbooks

This paper presents an analysis of the difficulty of the lecture text portions in 22 current Czech biology textbooks for 6th-9th grades. The evaluation methodology was based on PLUSKAL. The results indicate that the average difficulty scores increase from 6th grade (44.5) to 8th grade (51.48). Textbooks for 9th grades show lower difficulty levels.

Teachers' assistance to pupils with insufficient knowledge of the instruction language

The paper deals with the problems of pupils in bilingual environments who have insufficient knowledge of the instruction language. The quantitative Q-method procedures were used to gather findings that can enable teachers to assist pupils in such situations.

An evaluation of some selected natural-sciences and biology workbooks

This paper evaluates the exercises contained in two natural-sciences and biology workbooks, one by Prodos publishing co. and the other by Fortuna publishing co. Tollingerová's classification was used to assess the materials. Results indicate that the difficulty of exercises in the two workbooks is comparable. There is however a difference in the level of variety.
