This paper reports on the project titled "Further education of vocational-school teachers in support of preparing and implementing school-based curricula". This project is coordinated by the National Institute of Technical and Vocational Education in Prague. The aim of the present paper is to analyze one part the questionnaire use in the above-mentioned project which was focusing on individual educational needs of teachers at secondary technical schools and vocational schools.

The Romany minority in the Czech Republic and multicultural education

This paper examines the issue of the Romany minority in relation to formal education and to the necessity of multicultural education. We report findings of several studies mapping primary-school, secondary-school, and vocational-school students' knowledge about and attitudes towards Roma. We also propose some teaching procedures usable in multicultural education. Next, we discuss how to work with a class that shows an increased amount of racist or xenophobic attitudes.

Students' interest in biology taught with the help of information and communication technology

Nowadays, information and communication technologies are a component of the everyday life of people. The present paper reports on a study which examined the interest of students in classes of biology in which information and communication technology is utilized. A questionnaire was constructed to elicit students' judgements about their biology classes. The variables which entered the analyses were the age and gender of respondents.

Motivational activities as an attention-getting device

This paper focuses on motivation as the primary device teachers can use to stimulate the interest of students in the matter under discussion during classes of mathematics. The study builds on the conclusions the present author has reached in her dissertation. The introduction describes the reason why this issue is of interest and states what the basic premises are. It further outlines briefly the structure of the study. The practical part provides some concrete demonstrations of the proposed motivational activities. Next, results are summarized and their usefulness for the teaching practice is discussed.

Assessing mathematical literacy within the OECD/PISA research in 2003

This paper comprises two parts. In the first one, the PISA research is introduced. The main period of focus is 2003, when mathematical literacy was investigated in greater detail. Individual components of mathematical literacy are described and their mutual interrelatedness is outlined. The second part provides a sample of problems that served as stimuli in the research. Their analysis with respect to individual mathematical skills is demonstrated.

Assessing the quality of interactions formed during play among mentally-handicapped children with communicative disorders

Play creates a natural context for social exchanges and interactions among children. The present paper describes the results of a qualitative research study that attempted to identify the most typical manifestations of starting social interactions in mentally-handicapped, school-aged individuals with communicative insufficiencies. The presented results have the form of qualitative definitions of characteristic behavior of a group of children at play in formal settings.

Group play as a tool for identifying and treating emotional or social problems in children with specific learning disorders

Learning disorders involve a number of relatively diverse difficulties children may experience. Not only do they affect strongly children's learning success but they also surface in children's emotions and in the way social interactions are structured. The present author reports findings of a study that attempted to resolve secondary difficulties of children suffering from specific learning disorders by means of cooperative play.

The diversity of exercises in natural history workbooks

This paper presents the results of a study that evaluated different exercises in natural history workbooks. Ten workbooks were analyzed in total, published by Fortuna, Nova skola, Prodos, Scientia, and SPN. Factors that were considered were the difficulty and the diversity of exercises. Results suggest that workbooks for the 4th and 5th grades contain the least difficult exercises and problems (group 1 and 2) which however are the most diverse at the same time.
