The gender-shift of nouns in the German language
- PhDr. Jarmila Dubová, Ph.d., katedra německého jazyka PdF UP
The gender-shift of nouns is an interesting phenomenon, which exists in both the Czech as well as in the German languages. In the German language, there is the shift between the masculine and neuter. Logically, the question arises which one is used more often.
The usage depends on the differences between the standard and spoken form of German and on the differences between the German language used in Germany and in Austria. In Germany, there is a strong tendency to use just one of the two possibilities.
Keywords: The gender shift of nouns between the standard and spoken form, the difference between the German language used in Germany and in Austria, the gender shift - the frequency of usage
