The Contribution of School Breaks to the All-day Physical Activity of 9- and 10-year-old Overweight and OBESE Children: an ActiTrainer Activity Monitor Pilot Study

This study examines whether physical activity (PA), in at least 30-minute school breaks, helps to achieve the recommended amount of daily PA and whether these exercises influence after-school PA. The ActiTrainer-based PA was monitored over two school days in 239 children aged from 9 to 10 (137 girls and 102 boys) in six classes of two elementary schools in Katowice (Poland) in February 2010. The levels of measured PA were assessed based on steps, heart rate, and duration of PA variables. PA, for at least 30 minutes in school breaks, represented an average of 1,258 steps for overweight and obese girls and 1,620 steps for boys, and 1336 steps for non-overweight girls and 1758 steps for boys. Children with at least 30 minutes of PA during school breaks attained a significantly higher daily amount of steps (p < 0.001), in comparison with less physically active children (girls: 11,357 steps versus 9,124 steps, boys: 11,433 versus 8,449). The daily 30 minutes of PA during school breaks amounts to 12.5% of the overall number of steps for girls and 16.3% for boys, contributing to higher school-PA and all-day PA and leading to the achievement of the recommended minimum of PA.
