A qualitative analysis of the playing interaction between a mother and a child suffering from elective mutism

In the introduction, the paper deals with elective mutism in the counseling process. It further comments on the diagnostic possibilities of the playing activity between parents and children, and also reports on its potential as a therapeutic tool. This paper is based on a study observing the specificities of this interaction, the communication patterns involved, and the behavior of children during the play itself. The obtained results, which were analyzed using traditional methodology, help the author to define the main problems of these children, as well as to describe the process of the interaction. Possible intervention methods for reducing the problems related to elective mutism are finally suggested.
