Grammar schools (Gymnasiums) with German language instruction were among the oldest schools in the Czech lands. Some of them were founded as church schools. It occurred either in periods when the Church had a monopoly on keeping educational institutions or when providing schools by an educational order appeared to be the easiest way. Such foundations were frequent as the language of instruction was Latin. In the 2nd half of the 19th century it was necessary to specify schools according to the language of instruction. Some of the above mentioned schools became public in this period, others remained private in the hands of the Church. The choice of the language of instruction at schools run by the Roman Catholic Church was influenced by the environment of the place where the school was situated and by personal orientation of people who administered it.
