Positive Behaviour Support in the school environment
- Katedra psychologie a patopsychologie, Pedagogická fakulta, Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci, Žižkovo nám. 5, 771 40 Olomouc
The article focuses on explaining the concept of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS/PBIS), which is relatively new in our region. In the process of implementing this approach in Czech schools, we have designed a course whose structure is described in the article. We particularly emphasize the principles of using proactive strategies that can lead to lasting changes in undesirable student behaviour. By the end of the text, readers should be able to describe the connections between PBS and Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), summarize the basic behavioural principles applicable in education to eliminate challenging behaviour, describe various functions of behaviour, and be aware of tools for collecting data on such challenging behaviours. The primary aim of the article is to promote the use of the PBS approach in the educational settings of regular and special schools in our region. We mainly utilize international research to explain to readers the relationship between PBS and ABA and to clarify the principles of PBS as they are established in other countries. To enhance clarity, we paraphrase some Czech authors who deal with student discipline issues and explain their perspectives using the language of applied behaviour analysis. A parallel objective of the article is to evaluate the effectiveness of our course in increasing participants' skills in measuring and assessing the function of challenging student behaviour, which is essential for successfully eliminating undesirable behaviour. This is demonstrated through pre-test and post-test results completed by our course participants. In this context, we also provide examples of participant responses on topics discussed in the subsequent text, highlighting the changes in responses before and after the course. The conclusion of the article addresses the evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of our course, which we derive primarily from feedback, based on which we describe adjustments and the further direction of PBS implementation in Czech schools.
