This paper provides an evaluation of the difficulty of lecture portions in five current Czech textbooks of science for 8th grades of elementary schools. The evaluation was realized according to the PLUSKAL methodology. The findings suggest that the overall difficulty of the texts ranges between 46.23 points (SCIENTIA publishing house) and 56.41 points (PRODOS publishing house). The numerical data density coefficient is very low for all the analyzed materials. The textbooks have different values of the technical information density coefficient (i) which ranges between 26 and 32 % as well as of the (h) coefficient that ranges between 69 and 73%.
Keywords: Biology textbooks, overall text difficulty, syntactic factors, semantic factors, technical information density
