The paper deals with the problems of teaching poetry at the elementary and secondary schools. The results of investigative research, made among 114 students at the grammar school, show that at the first place there is a need of improving mutual communication between teacher and student in the literature classes. At the interpretation of poetry we must come out from the theory of response aesthetics by which we can´t define the only possible meaning of artistic literary work.

Keywords: Literature class, interpretation of literary work, interpretation of poetry, response aesthetics, teacher of literature.
