AB The study focuses on the reflection of P. O. Hviezdoslav in the school books, noting the building of the cult of Hviezdoslav as the greatest Slovak poet. The material base consists of thirty-two didactic publications for primary and secondary schools published between 1954 and 2021. The aim of the paper is to find out, on the basis of a content-motivic analysis (supplemented by a stylistic analysis of references), to what extent the myth of the greatest Slovak writer is supported and created by school practice. In its focus, the research falls within the area of general linguistics (stylistics). The results have shown that in the second half of the last century the social meaning of the poet was associated with ideologically loaded motifs of the mother, the people/nation and labour, while in the 21st century there is a partial overcoming of socialist interpretations.
