The text describes the evolution of humanism and its various appraisals. It deals with the problem of conceptualization of "humanism" and "human" as these concepts are philosophical or ideological, and not scientific. The authors try to capture the ambiguity of humanistic ideas influencing cultural and sociopolitical European history. The problem of reductionism in the social sciences is mentioned within this context. The scientific perspective only focuses on a limited number of aspects of human life, not on the complexity of man, which is also a problem of alternative pedagogies with their conception of man. In conclusion the authors formulate their standpoint towards the danger of so-called "vanishing of humanity".
