The citizens of the European Union will have to know how to make themselves understood.In all federal lands in Germany the first foreign language will be taught as an obligatory subject in the first grade of Primary Schools not later than the school year 2007/08. Most often this will be English, in some lands French.The language can be also learned outside of school lessons. For younger as well as elder school children, even for adults various materials are defined, from illustrated books to pockets quiz and anecdotes up to multimedial CD-ROM. Above all publishers specialized in textbooks and teaching material bring an interesting and witty offer which defines the trend of learning foreign languages and proves, that it is possible to learn a foreign language by playing. The article brings a survey of the contemporary offer of textbooks and teaching materials for English and French on the German market.
